ABSTRACT
Law and ethics work together to support the rule of law and the respect for ethical values in organizations.
This presentation will investigate how ethical values influence legal decision-making from three perspectives.
First, this presentation will explore a new concept called ‘lawtegrity.’ Lawtegrity (a combination of ‘law’ and ‘integrity’) is the quality of honesty, moral uprightness, and ethical conduct toward legal mandates and company policies. The more ethically managers apply the rule of law, the more robustly firms comply with legal mandates.
Second, this presentation will explore how lawtegrity manifests in organizations. This presentation identifies five distinct ‘pathways’ of ethical behavior that firms generally follow. This behavior ranges from an active antagonism toward business ethics to the embodiment of enduring ethical values at the core of the organization.
Finally, this presentation will highlight how lawtegrity thrives in the most ethical organizations, and then introduce a little-known United Nations framework that supports the ethical application of the rule of law worldwide.
