ABSTRACT

The analysis of supply chain structure and design has taken on new importance with the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic, invasion of Ukraine by Russia, and increasing tensions between China and the West. Firms want to understand the provenance of their raw materials and components to stay in compliance with national and international policies. Though the methods of analyzing supply chain structure and design are not mathematically sophisticated, when done well, they can shape broad organizational, national, and international policies. In this talk, we will address some contemporary applied problems in supply chain design. First, we consider a supply chain redesign in a military context whereby a change to the network was deliberated based upon operational considerations. Next, we analyze and assess a narcotics supply chain in the United States that is currently responsible for more than 150 deaths per day in overdoses. We will end by considering the reorganization of commercial global supply chains and their economic and strategic consequences.
