IÉSEG opens first SPOC: a new online infrastructure finance course based on “gamification”

At the end of January, IÉSEG School of Management launched its first SPOC, or small private online course, which focuses on the topic of “Infrastructure Finance” and is based on the method of “gamification” (the use of game elements and design to stimulate learning). Taught entirely in English, this innovative new course is currently open to all the School’s students in Lille and Paris.

Participating students are challenged during the course to progress through nine different levels during which they manage the finance of an infrastructure project. This approach (of gamification) helps students advance through the course and develops their understanding of the key topics related to infrastructure finance.

Developed by the School’s Center for Educational and Technological Innovation (*CETI), in close collaboration with the course director Patrick Daguet (Professor of Finance at IÉSEG), the SPOC uses a variety of learning resources including: e-learning; infographics; videos which have been filmed at a variety of external locations such as an aerodrome, construction site etc. and which have been selected to bring students closer to the infrastructure projects. These are complemented by interviews with a number of experts in the field of infrastructure finance.

“The aim of this new course is to enable our students to combine theory and practice in an innovative learning format” explains Loic Plé, Professor of Strategy and Organsiation at IÉSEG and head of the School’s Center for Educational and Technological Innovation.

This course is currently open to IÉSEG students but the School plans to make it more widely available to the public as a MOOC (massive open online course) in the near future. Upon completing the course, IÉSEG students will receive a certificate of completion which they can highlight on their CV.

A short video presenting the future MOOC is available here.
