University Cup & Derby: an exciting weekend of sports for IÉSEG

In late March 2025, students from IÉSEG excelled on the fields during the University Cup and the ‘Derby‘—two significant events for the School’s sports associations. Highlighting remarkable performances and the commitment of the supporters’ association, let’s review these competitions with Pol CASTEL, President of the Bureau Des Sports (BDS) and member of the cheerleading team, and Mathilde VANDOMME, Event Manager at the BDS and captain of the cheerleaders.

Great results for IÉSEG at the University Cup

The University Cup gathers all sports teams from the Université Catholique de Lille across seven disciplines. IÉSEG participated in four disciplines and achieved notable results:

  • Men’s Volleyball: 1st place
  • Men’s Football: 2nd place
  • Men’s & Women’s Badminton: 3rd place
  • Women’s Volleyball: Quarterfinals

The atmosphere was vibrant, supported by smooth organization and strong involvement from the School’s supporters’ association. “The students were thrilled with the event; there was a fantastic atmosphere. The excellent organization truly fostered this dynamic environment,” explains Pol CASTEL.

The IÉSEG cheerleading team also participated in the Derby, an inter-school sports event. The highlight was the cheerleaders’ victory, despite a rushed preparation and new members joining mid-course.

We didn’t expect to win. Compared to other teams, we thought we might not have the level, but we adapted to the Derby’s context, which was more relaxed than the WIUC,” shares Mathilde.

With just one month of preparation, the team optimized their time by revisiting a previously worked choreography. “We have three training sessions per week, including one with a coach from the French team. It’s intense commitment, and BDS supports us tremendously!” she adds.

When team spirit leads to success

Beyond sporting achievements, the exceptional atmosphere also contributed. “The team gets along really well, and the atmosphere is great. What’s fantastic is that we have diverse profiles, and that’s what propelled us,” affirms Mathilde.

Meanwhile, the BDS continues to play a crucial role in IÉSEG’s sports life. Representing 23 sports and 42 active members, the association promotes a wide range of activities and integrates new students through sports. “Being part of a team is an excellent way to integrate into IÉSEG and fully experience student life,” conclude Mathilde and Pol.

Congratulations to all teams and supporters on this weekend full of emotions and outstanding performances!
